Iron Sharpening Iron

Dear Covenant Community,

I have the incredible privilege of participating in Princeton Theological Seminary’s "Iron Sharpening Iron" program, designed specifically for women in church leadership. Iron Sharpening Iron equips women to embrace and build upon the capacities, agency and savvy they possess to negotiate challenging leadership contexts with a confidence born of competence. Drawing on best practices from leaders in church, business, public service and beyond, the program’s interdisciplinary approach serves the fundamental goal of promoting capable women to thrive in God’s calling in a way that has theological integrity and a sophisticated philosophy and practice.

Each year, Iron Sharpening Iron selects women to participate in the 12-month program, at the end of which they will receive an Executive Certificate in Leadership. I attended my first cohort gathering this month and a remarkable group of 20 women, carefully selected from a diverse pool of applicants across various denominations and from different parts of the United States and Canada.

The highlight of the program was the opportunity to learn from experts in fields outside of ecclesial leadership. We heard from an industrial psychologist who shared insights on conscious leadership, a state house representative who discussed the importance of keeping the mission in mind, and a professor from NYU Wagner School of Public Service who offered strategies for building effective teams. It was a whirlwind of learning, but a deeply enriching one. I am so grateful to participate in this outstanding program. Thank you to our Personnel Committee and Session for endorsing this invaluable opportunity to learn and grow.

In Christ,

Rev. Jamie Butcher
